Yes, I am currently 100% remote. Research shows that telehealth can be as effective as in-person therapy, even for kids! I can provide services to you as long as you live in a PSYPACT state (AL, AZ, AR, CO, CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NV, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WV, WI, WY, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands).
I use Telehealth by SimplePractice as my platform for sessions.

Not at all! Keep in mind that I won’t be sitting on a video call with a three-year-old… that would be ridiculous! Instead, picture a visit in which I initially talk to you, the parent, and then coach you through some therapeutic interactions and exercises with your child. This is almost always best practice for young children anyway, whether in-office or virtual. If this still sounds unusual to you, I would be happy to discuss it with you over the phone.
Once children become older (typically 10+), I find that traditional one-on-one sessions are much more likely to be beneficial, depending on the type of concern.

I generally see ages 2 and up. As mentioned above, therapy for my younger ones will be a “team effort” with significant parent involvement.
-
Yes! While I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and the parents seeking help on their behalf, I also see adults, including parents wanting support for themselves, young adults adjusting to independence, and anyone navigating mental health challenges.

The easiest way is usually to call me at 919-214-9664. If I don’t pick up, I’m probably in a session, and will try to call you back within the hour.
You can also send me a message, send me an email at ryan@drryanegan.com, or click the Client Portal button at the top of my site to pick a time directly in my calendar that works for you.
After we talk, you'll then be invited to complete the initial forms that I need before the first appointment.
You will then get an email with a link to our video visit.
If I decide we are not a good fit, I will do my best to connect you with a good alternative.

Download the Telehealth by SimplePractice app on your device in advance. Make sure you are in a private, indoor location with the door closed. For child/family appointments, make sure the youth and at least one parent is present for the whole meeting. There should be no one else using the room.
For young children, position your device so that I can see a wide shot of the whole room. This way, you can set up entertainment (toys, tablet, etc.) in the background so I can observe them playing while we talk. Most of my questions during the first visit will be for parents.

The first visit is an information-gathering visit. I will ask a lot of questions to make sure I understand the concerns and know how to help.
The second visit is usually when I summarize my understanding of your situation, offer diagnostic impressions, and make treatment recommendations.
After that, I usually meet each week with you for 8-24 visits using proven techniques to address your concerns. What this looks like will vary depending on the type of concern, but much of my work involves teaching specific techniques to you that you will then implement at home to either prevent issues or respond to them head-on. When children are involved, that may mean a combination of meeting with the parents and the child, exclusively the parents, or exclusively the child. Sometimes I only meet with the parents. It truly depends on what the problem is, and what the scientific research says about how to address it.

I am available 9am-7pm Eastern time, Monday through Friday. I try to work as late as possible, as families have told me they like the after-school availability.

In North Carolina and Florida, I accept Aetna, Cigna, and United/Optum. In other states, I accept private pay (see below). My billing partner, Alma, will give you an estimate of how much you can expect to pay when you first get started. You can also check with this tool.

45-minute session: $180
30-minute session: $150
If you like, I can provide you with a "superbill" so that you can submit it for out-of-network benefits.

If you cancel 24 hours in advance, there is no fee! Otherwise, a fee equal to the full cost of the scheduled visit (see "rates without insurance") will be applied. I keep this fee in place to 1) encourage consistent participation in therapy, and 2) maintain a productive practice. When you cancel on short notice, it is difficult for me to fill that time slot with someone else who needs help. I hope you can understand.
If you are an existing client, you can cancel, reschedule, or request new appointments through the client portal if the request is made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment time.
